It wasnât long, and the water started to go back down. Game had started to get scarce on the hills after the massive influx of people. Dagâs bone fish hooks had been a real hit toward the end when fish in the water had become the most accessible food source. Oona had mentioned that the waters were down, and everyone else was heading out for better hunting. Dag just smiled, âNot yet. Let them go. We have food stored donât we?â
Oona frowned, âMany mouths, food gone quick.â
Dag nodded, âMany hands too, and Iâm going to take advantage of that.â
Oona frowned again, but she wouldnât challenge his decision.
It wasnât long until Dag had them all organized into wood gathering teams. Jack did a good job of relaying the orders. A perfect little NCO. They were out most of the day, coming back to camp by ones and twos just to drop off more wood. That evening, Dag had them dig a large hole and create a charcoal mound. Charcoaling was a dirty job, but while they had all been about gathering wood, and building the kiln, Dag had been sorting the wood, and he had enough available for two new travois, and enough to make new bows for the newcomers.
He could tell by the end of the second day, they were starting to wonder if they had made a mistake staying with Dag. He spent most of the evening up by the fire that last night and had five new bows to show for his efforts. There was still a limited number of arrows, but there was enough now to give each of the new boys one, and get them started with basic practice. The light in their eyes was all that was needed to convince Dag that they were no longer worried about regrets for staying behind.
When they finally headed out, they had the original travois, now loaded up with the goods they had traded for, and it was pulled by Lavern and Shirley. It was the only one with the nice wicker basket. The two new travois were pretty bare, but all of the rest that was being hauled back to the castle had been loaded on them, all neatly bundled up in the skins they had taken in trade. Most of it was charcoal, but even so, it would be useful to have. The two new travois were pulled by the new teen girls who had been added to the party. They took turns, so none of them wore out too soon.
Jack took the boys scouting ahead. With the flood waters gone, there was still a thick layer of mud that was more dry in some places than others. No one wanted to pull the travois through a mud pit. It was still pretty hard going, and left everyone filthy and exhausted by the end of the day. Dinner the two evenings that they were on the road was meager, and breakfast was not much better, however it was all better than the kids had been getting on average.
